Portable Document Format Files (PDFs)
PDF is a file format that may be viewed using either a modern browser or Adobe® Reader®. It is a format that is being used on many different Web sites because it can be viewed on any operating system.
How PDF Files are Used on This Site
PDFs are used on this site when there is a need to present multi-page text files, multi-page image files, or files which combine both.
Files which contain links to return to the original ACCESS page will open in the same browser window. Files that do not contain links which allow a viewer to return to the original ACCESS page will open in a new window and are labeled accordingly.
It Seems Slow...
Modern browsers (IE 5x, 6x and Netscape 6x,7x) will open PDFs using a "plugin" application. Files that are large in size may appear to open slowly because the PDF must first download in your browser. The amount of memory (RAM) in your computer may also affect how quickly pages appear.
A Faster Way Using Adobe® Reader®
Viewing a PDF that is large in size (or contains many images) is often faster and smoother if you first save the file and then view it in Adobe® Reader®.
Getting Adobe® Reader®...
Download Adobe® Reader® using the link below. Follow the installation instructions on the Adobe Web site.
Get Adobe® Reader® (opens new window)
Using Reader – PDFs that Open in the Same Browser Window
Internet Explorer 5x or later – right-click on the link and click on "Save Target As...". Save the file and open it.
Netscape 6x or later – right-click on the link and click on "Save Link As...". Save the file and open it.
Using Reader – PDFs that Open in a New Browser Window
Wait until the file finishes downloading in the new window and then click on the "Saves a copy of the file" button in the upper left corner of the window. Close the window and open the saved file.
